Founded in 1987, it operates through nine regional hubs and collaborates with local partners to ensure that everyone can freely voice their opinions and access essential information. The organization engages in cutting-edge research, legal analysis, and advocacy, focusing on critical themes such as media independence, access to information, journalist protection, civic space expansion, and the integration of human rights within the digital landscape.

Inspired by Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, ARTICLE 19 is committed to defending the right to express opinions and share information without interference. Over the past 35 years, it has championed successful campaigns to free imprisoned journalists, shape constitutional protections, and monitor free expression across 162 countries.
