WFTS, established on December 14, 1981, is a prominent independent television station in Tampa Bay, Florida, founded by local businessman Ian Wheeler with a mission to deliver family-oriented programming. Initially airing syndicated reruns and religious content, WFTS transitioned to an ABC affiliate in 1994 after a network shuffle. The station quickly gained acclaim, with its news division, Tampa Bay 28 News, earning the title of "Best Newscast" shortly after its debut. Rebranded as ABC Action News in 1999, it pioneered high-definition broadcasting for local newscasts in 2007 and has since won numerous awards for its investigative journalism and overall news excellence, including multiple Emmy and Edward R. Murrow Awards.
